Audience Effects Theory

Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

This is the view that audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

This is the more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. This assumes no individual difference in audience members.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Bumbler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:  To inform people about this.
 > Why:to inform if something is happening in their area or town/city.

IDENTITY:To show who made blue planet 2

to show people that he made this and too time to do this

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Action movies will entertain people and make them want to watch this.
because now these days kids and some adults like to see violence and that is entertaining for them to see how the planet is made and is educational.

RELATIONSHIPS: To make people stop fishing and help the environment
because fishing is getting to many fish to get extincted and we will soon have no fish to eat and the ocean will be changed for ever.

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text? producers can position the audience in a certain way and influence there reading so they accept the intended message by using recognised code and conventions.

2) What is the op-positional reading of a media text? They want to commit crimes and make them more common in London.

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
That teenagers are trying to act hard and hold knife and go in gangs and assault other people also steal and go to jail.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an op-positional reading of the trailer? Most teenagers do not act like that and other adults will think there children will kill people and be with gangs which will make there children not leave there houses.
