Radio station blog task

1) What radio stations were offered by the BBC before 1967?Radios 1,2,3,and 4 each came into existence at 5.30 a.m. 30th September 1967.

2) How was BBC radio reorganised in September 1967? What were the new stations that launched?BBC Radio was completely reorganised in 1967 and it was decided that one channel would be speech-based, one for serious music and drama, and one for lighter music, including most popular music and a few talk-based shows.

3) What was pirate radio and why was it popular?According to the research both pirate radio listeners and those running pirate radio stations thought that licensed broadcasters failed to cater sufficiently for the needs of the public at large.

4) Why did pirate radio stop broadcasting in 1967? Because it became illegal and marines where hunting people down.

5) How did the BBC attract young audiences to Radio 1 after pirate radio stations were closed down?It was launched in 1967 to meet the demand for music generated by pirate radio stations, when the average age of the UK population was 27. The BBC claim that they target the 15–29 age group, and the average age of its UK audience since 2009 is 30. BBC Radio 1 started 24-hour broadcasting on 1 May 1991.

6) What was 'needle time' and why was it a problem for BBC Radio?Needle time was a problem because it was a limiting broadcasting thing that would not let people watch all the time which would mean they lost money.

7) How did BBC Radio 1 offer different content to previous BBC radio stations?they gave out more childish content so more children could watch and they also had stuff where adults could have their stuff.

8) Who was the first presenter for BBC Radio 1 and why did these new Radio 1 DJs cause upset initially at the traditional BBC?The first disc jockey to broadcast on the new station wasTony Blackburn, whose cheery style, first heard on Radio Caroline and Radio London, won him the prime slot on what became known as the "Radio 1 Breakfast Show".

It would appeal to the young people by him reading books.
10) What conventions did Tony Blackburn's radio show borrow from pirate radio - which made it very different to previous BBC radio content?Tony Blackburn had a more easy going and enjoyable personality
